Aug 25th 2014 | Lecce Italy | Week 9

Hello family!!! How are you all??? Well to anser moms questions it is pretty hard to describe. it is a lot different but a lot is the same. some of the city is very very pretty (cenrto) we call it so the middle of the city is filled with huge catholic churches that are amazing and that part is super beautiful. then outside the city its dirtier and people dont take very good care of things. its all concreat apartments that arent very nice. i miss carpet so much lol its kind of weird but here is no carpet here at all. we went to the mall the other p day and it was very similair to an american mall. its funny cause they play american music everywhere here like all the time kind of surprised me. the people are generally nice but i guess this zone im in kind of has a bad rap for having rude peope its hard to say. but we talk to alot of nice people everyday. 

  That golf scramble sounded really fun. those are always super fun to do and everyone remembers that kind of thing! Also thats nice that meg and brett got to spend some time toghether at the cabin. its true there is just something about being there that is nice even when your not doing something every second its is realzing thats for sure. thanks for the recipy mom ill do my best! that exciting about jocelyn i want to here about how that transition goes??

  Ya same goes for us with the work dad. the summer is a tough time because people are unreliable and also Lecce is filled with tourists so finding is difficult so im excited to get to the normal time of the year. Sad to hear about the jays but really what can i guy expect. wow that is really diffucult situation for the canes. that kidn of dissapionts me about erkamps and duke. its a hard situation for everyone but i dont know if thats the right move. i really hope they can turn it around over there. and i dont know if i have master the getting up early. well i can get up early it just takes me a few minutes to get out of sombie mode but i will tell you guys ther is no issue with going to sleep haha. 

  Good to hear about pax and dad getting back into the game!! 

  

   Pax nice to year you will be able to teach me how to fish when i get back!! we need a fisherman in the family!!! and im excited to hear about how your hockey is going to be!! Your going to be great and make a ton of awesome friends!! my companion is awesome he helps me out alot thats for sure!! 

   Ok so as far as my life this week was a little disappointing but oh well. We didnt get any baptisimal dates but we are still working on it. we have a lesson with the romaniam family tonightso pray for us haha the girl is really cool she is only 12 or 13 but she understands a lot and is reading the book or mormon and stuff! not so sure about the mom and its going to be a challenge to get them to come to church  because the mom works as like a care giver for this crazy old women so she cant really leave the house but we will see what we can do. they are really fun to meet with but it hard to explain much to them cause they jsut dont understand very well. we have a couple other people we are working with and we just need them to take the next step and put there faith in the lord and we are doing all we can to help them do that! so ever all the work is going not bad. like i said its tourist season so its hard to find new people but we can do it. We have some really cool members in the ward that i have learned a lot from already and its not easy to be a member here cause lots of them are fairly poor and dont have big extended families like us to support them. Hopefully next week i will have some really good news! 

  So yesterday we went to a shirlonken wedding.. ya. a potention investigator family invited us and it was one of the craziest things lol we missed the actually wedding but we made it just in time for the food haha everyone was dressed up like all cool and there was probably like 300 people there and probably 3 of them were white and two were us ahah so we got some weird looks but it was really fun and we made some good friends!! Also i have been reading the book about Moms ancestors and James Akroyd is like my hero lol reading his life story and mission journal makes me feel so blessed. but really its the coolest book and i didnt think i would read it very much! i would encourage all of you to read it! they all have such amazing faith and just put all there trust in the lord when all they have is on the line. also its cool when they talk about magrath and i would like to know where they lived in magrath. It has really made me think a lot about how thankful i am for the curcumstances that i had growing up from family to extended family and friends and just all the people i was around and how the helped me get to where im at today. 

  I didnt really get scared to bad by any dogs this week so that was nice. Ill try and send some cool pictures cause the city is super cool right now. and we are going to tour some churches today so next week i should have some cool pics. Also me and my companion were talking about this and i think it aplies to normal life totally also. we decided that everytime we leave the house we pray and tell heavenly father were we are going so he can put people in our paths. I was thinking that we all could do that. so my invite is one time when you are going somewhere even shopping or whatever and you think you might have some time just tell heavenly faither when and where you are goign and keep your eyes out for chances to share the gospel! super easy haha not like mitch when he told us to read the book of mormon in like a week haha jk jk I hope all of you are doing awesome and thanks for the letters! Aug 18th 2014 | Lecce Italy | Week 8

Joc growing up thats awesome!! haha getting all ready to go to school! Your going to be awesome!! Tell those people that ask that i am doing really good just spreading the gospel and eating Gelato... ok i didnt have one in my first week and this week i had 3. oh my goodness they are so good i could litterally eat one every meal its so crazy haha but ya. Ysa is going to be so fun for you and hopefully you can get a nice big group of friends you can do stuff with!! Sounds loke another great week at the lake everyone! always the best of times! Thats to bad uncle bryan cant play anymore but what can ya do i guess. Jocelyn is excited to watch you play so you will have to do good!! AHH Mitch thats a sweet story. That is cool but unfortunatly anziano kelly has to do most of the faith defending cause i never know what they say haha thats not always true i can understand some conversations but it depends on how fast the person talks.. it really is amzing being a full time representative of JEsus Christ and telling everyone we see that!! Cant say i understood a lot more at church but i am in more conversatinos now but still not many. the centro of the centre of the city is very cool with really old churches and everything and the outskirts are a little dirtier but nothing to bad. its all apartment building and stuff like that. being in the branch presidency is pretty fun. I have a question for dad. We have to assing talks everyweek and if he had any good ideas on how to do that or like some kind of list of topics for talks somethings like that would be cool!! They really like only eat once a day here its crazy. they eat likea huge lunch and for breakfast and dinner they just snack. so we never actually eat dinner we take about an hour or and hour and a half for lunch and just eat dinner before we go to bed. kinda weird but it works out ok. haha mom getting all sad cause she is losing her favortie child haha sorry pax its jocelyn and we all know it haha but have fun at the cabin with meg and brett!! 

  I tried to think of somethings to write about. so if forgot to say the first real Italian person i talked to thought i was speaking russian or i was russian im not sure haha oh well. i had the privlage of killing a cockroach the other day but that was the day before deep cleaning so that was nice but it scared the crap out of me haha also twice dogs have scared me so bad i dropped my book of mormon ahha the one time i actually hit it in the face not like raelly hard but i hit it with the word of good we say and it kidn of backed down luckily lol i was scared!! some other stuff. my tooth is just about healed so im not worried about that. oh this is important. so turns out i dont actually know how to cook lol so mom if you could send me some like simple recipies that you think i could handle that would  be very nice. i was also thinking if aunty cathy had some cool itilain pasta recipies she wouldnt mind giving me that would be cool!! oh and what are the pin numbers to my cards lol and its two weeks in a row that our bransh president didnt wear a belt haha so. 

  But the best news is we got two new investigators and anziano kelly said that he has had 3 new investigators in his last 4 transfers i think so its kind of a big deal. they are a romanian lady and her daoughter and they dont speak great itilian so i can understand some of waht they say so its nice.We have only tought on lesson and we were goign to show the josepsh smith video but of course they didnt have a dvd player so next time we will show it and then ask them if they will be baptized when they come to knwo that these things are true. Also our mission president promissed every companionship in our zone that if we work hard we will see a baptism and we have afew people that it might be but we dont have anyone that is really close so we are putting our faith in the lord big time!!! As far as the language goes it is getting better. some of the grammer things are hard to get and i keep making the same mistakes over and over but oh well just keep trying i guess. I dont really know what else to say. We do a lot of finding and we talk to some  really cool people and some not as cool. but really most people are really nice or just kind of ignore us. we actually dont meet as many real catholics as you would think. we have met a couple that are devote but for the most part people just believe in jesus and thats about it. we do door to door a bit but we havent seen much succes from that is seams like when we do street contacting thats when we get the most numbers and have good conversations. its really amazing the people that will stop and listen. we talked to this guy who owned a tatto and pericing shop and he accpted tha book of mormon and talked with us for like 10 mins. i stoped a person on a bike the other day and normally we dont stop people on bikes haha and he said he would come to english course. oh ya we do and english course twice a week and that acounts for like 70 percent of the baptisms in the mission i guess. its really fun and a good way to get to knwo people and let them know we are normal people. so lots of time we will stop younger people and invite them to english course. right now i am in bari for zone conference slash p day. so today is p day and we are havign a big zone soccer game so that should be fun and tomorrow is zone conf so im excited for that! im excited to write you next week and tell you how the work went because we did weekly planning and we plan to invite 5 people to have baptismal dates this week. pretty crazy but we really think we can do it!! well not we can do it but the lord can do it for us cause we are really going to need his help in order to reach our goal! The members here are really cool but it is frustrating for me at church in particular cause i think i come of as shy or kind of stiff because i dont talk to a lot of people when really i would love to talk with everyone but i just need to not worry so much and just try anyways. sorry i didnt really take any pictures this week but i will try next week! Oh i did a scambio we call it or an exchange with Anziano Bamer who has only been out one transfer before me so that was fun. he speaks alright and understands a lot more than me so that helped. There are a lot of testimoni di jeovia here or jahova witnesses and we have ran into them a few times and there usaully decently nice  but we just try to get away as fast as we can because its just a waste of time i think. sorry this letter is all over the place but im just writting what comes to mind lol its just me and my companion in our apartment. before i came ther were 4 elders in lece but the blew out 2 before i came because there wasnt enough work i guess. we think they might give us a set of sister though. If i think of anythng else i will include it while i   write some friends. I love you and if people ask tell them im doing good and also that they should give referalls to the missionaries lol  but for real! I know this church is true and i also know that the spirtit is the real teacher and that is how we can knwo things are true for ourselves and thats what we tell all the people we teach cause if it was up to convincing people with words i would be useless haha all the best and have a great rest of the summer!!!

Aug 11th 2014 | Lecce Italy | Week 7

Buongiorno!! hello family!!!! so know our family has two member of a ward or branch presidency lol ill explain more later! just  a heads up im not going to write with capitals cause its a weird button and i just mess up. so i have like a million things i could tell you but i think ill just start with how im felling these days. it really is so cool to actaully be on a misson and its actually kind of sareal. but i am really loving it, it is difficult not going to lie because i dont know whats going on most of the time and i feel kind of like a burdon to my companion who is awesome by the way. but when you cant tell what anying is saying you can fell the spirit so that is nice!!! i know these first few weeks and months are going to be a little rough but i just cant imagine the joy that we must feel when we finally can change someones life with this amazing gospel!!! 

   Anyways tell the Fishers thanks for the cookies!! they sent me some my last day in the mtc so that was really nice of them! well to start is was actually kind of sad to leave the mtc cause i made a lot of good friends and there is a chance i might not get to see some of them again. but really i was super excited to leave!! so the plane ride was pretty good. i wish i could have called more but we had litterally zero time inbetween the next two flights so im super happy i called when i did. i wish i could have called mitch and dad but i feel like i have a decent idea of what they would have said ahah. <so on the long flight i had two sweet missionary oppertunities in english!!! haha so i first talk to a man  from nigeria and he was a religious man and knew alot about stuff and i told him about joseph smith and about living prophets and gave him a book of mormon so hoperfully he thinks about that. then the lady on the other side of me was going to school in turkey and i talked alot about jopseph smith and about how the book of mormon proves that he is a true prophet of god and she said she was almost dont her book and she would read the book of mornon i gave her after so you never know with those two! it was really fun. 

  then we got to the mission home. its was so cool ill send some pics of it! president and his wife are both sweet and im looking forward to learning from them. oh ya im serving in a city called Lecce. ill say more about that later. i am learing more and more all the time about the italian culture but as far as what kind of mission president President is he is kind of laid back but know in a bad way because for instince italians eat lunch from like 1-4 its crazy so when we have meal appiontments we cant really just say like ok were done and leave. we try and make it a short as we can  but it uaually atleast takes an hour and a half. if no more. 

 so first day i take a train for about 6 hours to lecce there i met Anziano kelly and of course our train was two hours late so we dont get to lecce until like ten ten thirty maybe. and there is the wine taisting festival going on so it like crazy. but i wish i could explain to you what we walked through.  it was totally out of a movie. like live band playing with break dancers and we are walking through like tight italian streets with probably 5-7 storie buiilding and beautiful catholic churches everywere and everything is like thousands and thousand of years old!! it was unreal like one of the coolest things i have ever done even thought i was pulling two really heavy suitcases and i was sweating like crazy. its so hot here lol im sweating like all the time but oh well. the members here are really cool. some are kidna crazy but i have had two meal appiontments already and they were both amazing food and really nice people. i probably had the stangest first day experience in the world. so we go to this members house for a meal and he is the ward mission leader so before we eat we go downstairs to do coralation with him and there is a massage table and im like oh cool he does massage.. ya you know where this is going haha well your were close. so he tells me to take of my shoes and im like super confused cause i dont know why in the world i would do that and so ya basically he just gave us a foot massage but even better than that because he is more like a foot kyropracter hard to explain but pretty sweet hah so i got a foot massage the first day on the mish so i guess you could say i feel welcomed! 

 so church. church was interesting and like i said before they made the the second counciler to the bishop behind my companion as first counciler. and there was a steak leader in our meeting and he said the Anziano kelly that they never call people into that position in there first city like the did with me so that is kind of intersting. im a little scared but oh well. pretty cool though. our branch has about 30-35 people so not to bad but pretty small. we have our own building which is kind of rare they tell me but its cool. nothing like a normal chapal but still gets the job done! so ya i pretty much sat threw 3 hours of giberish really didnt understand anything. i was lucky by the end of the lesson to know what the topic was.  but really even though i couldnt understand anyting i really could feel they exact same spirtit that i felt so many times in the churches in magrath. oh and i had to bear a short testimony in sacrament meeting which was pretty scary not going to lie. i think i did ok and they didnt laugh to much so i guess is did ok. also my first day and the meal appiontment with the member family of course they asked me to pray over the food and i was so scared lol but its never really that bad. most people we have met speak a tiny bit of english so its fun to kind of teach eachother and its takes the pressior off for sure! 

 my companions name is anziano kelly. hey is from alaska/utah so. he grew up mostly in alalska i think and thats were he tells people hes from so its not boring like utah lol he has been out a year and speaks really good italian. he is super nice and he is helping me out a lot. im actually taller than him so thats kinda nice hahahah oh and he has taken some intrest in jocelyn lol so watch out sis. thats all about me so far.

  joc those pictures were super gross so i used them to ward of anziano kelly so he doesnt like you anymore. im so excited and want to here about how everything goes in edmonton i hope its awesome and you love it! that stinks about your water sports but mitch was probably happy that you cant show him up anymore haha jk jk how is your water sporting mitch?? 

 you meg sounds like your getting really busy cause someone has to put food on the table i guess haha sounds like the cabbin is solid though and everyone is enjoying themselves. hows the tan coming meg?? and have to got on the skii yet? ya i wish brett was there that would have been sweet to talk to him! oh well next time. ill try not to leave to much out meg and dissapiont my big sister lol 

  sounds like mitch and mom are mostly cabbin livin these days which is good to hear i like that! thanks for the pics mom those were really nice! the picture of grandmas funeral make me a little sad not going to lie but it is allways cool to see all the brothers together cause those are the fruits of her life really as crazy as they all are haha jk jk 

 aslo dad you seam like your having a good time at the cabin. nive to hear rory is doing good i like him. thats is so classic about tyler i love it! i can only imaging uncle randy and his little lying face that he has. haha thats so aweomse!!!! i hope the family week was good and you continue to enjoy the cabin!!

Coia! THey are letting us email today cause its our last day! I got your package and those socks are great! And thanks for the floss! Brett will be happy with that! Not really sure what to say! i just read that letter about joc. Thats sucks so bad! i fell horrible for her! Lots of time to read the book or Mormon i guess. I dont want to brag on the family email but i finished the book of mormon since being here so no big deal haha ok well have a good life!

July 30th 2014 | Provo MTC | Week 5

Cioa tutti!!!!! SO cool to here that everyone is having a blast at the Cabin! I miss you all and it would be fun to be there but i dont know if my Italiano would be as good haha. But it is great to here that everyone is there together and having a good time. It always makes me smile when i think about it! I love that quote you sent me mom! Its really true, this mission is a tiny sacrifice compared to all the blessing a have been able to experience through my amazing family and there is nothing more in the world than i want to share with people is how families can be strengthen and united here on earth and then eventual bound together for eternity! I was kind of sad to hear that everyone is to the acceptable level behind the boat.. Thats not as much fun but non the less is always an amazing time! Last year was so cool to have so many of the family together in one place!! Those are definitely the memories we will remember for ever!! Brooks gave me a little sneak peak of mitchs insident on the links, but its nice to know that the passion and intensity is still there! I also know the pain of younger bryan when my dad said he was sick of him driving in past him but still losing to the old guys. It doesnt matter how far ya hit it but how many times i guess. Must be hot if meg is getting a sunburn but im glad to here that you have been having nice weather! 

  Ill try and filly you in a bit on how my life is going. So we are all getting the itch to leave but its a scary thought thats for sure. When ever our teachers talk to eachother full speed im lucky to pick up a couple words but oh well. Its hard hearing about all these awesome stories of missionary work and then not being able to really do it! But i know this is neccesary and once i get there ill probably wish i was back in the MTC. So i dont want anynone to take this story the wrong way. I love it here and i try to be a productive as i can with my time. But one night after 6 hours of class 2 hours of study i was reading in 2 nephi and come how i starting drumming on my scriptures with my two marking crayons and i would laying down a pretty good beat and when i finshed i looked at My book of Mormon and realized there was like 100 yellow and red dots on the page.. So then i realized i should never drumming when i should be studding! So i wont do that again. But its weird cause before my mission i had a hard time reading lots of the scriptures at one time but here its such i a nice break from everything i love it. I have like half of Mosiah left and i will have read through it since i have been here. One sister in my district is super good with the scriptures and knows her way around them so well that she has inspired me! Or embarrassed me i dont know which one! Last class we learned the last grammer concept which was nice cause they have been throwing tenses and all kinds of different concepts at us so its nice to know i atleast know what all the concepts are even if i cant really apply them! Yesterday we have a devotional and the speaker was the guys who wrote The Other Side of Heaven and he was the missionary in the movie! It was sweet his would show a clip and then be like i remember how i felt when that happened. It was really cool!  Im sorry i dont have much to say but im sure next week i will have Tanti tanti cose (lots and lots of things) to say! Hopefully all good! 

 Max nice to hear from ya buddy!! Thats sweet that your swimming in the water!! Whats next maybe the easy skii?? that would be pretty sweet! This is to Mitch Brooks and Bryan. This is my call to you to step up the golf game. Stop worrying about the drives and maybe works on the puts haha but what fun is that. I hope you all dont get to far inhead of me behind the boat but somehow im not so worried about bryan.. or brooks. JK JK brooks looked pretty good behind the skii i will say. Nice to hear dad is still handling everyone on the course that doesnt surprise me but also nice to hear the water is nice and warm! Bad knews about the car. Sorry but at least this time it wasnt directly my fault. Ask mitch it was all Satan. Nice to hear about the Jays. This is the year! And joc thats sweet that you have a place in Edmonton! That will be fun to meet knew girls and maybe one of them will become friends like me and sam did ya never know! 

   Well i hope i wasnt to boring. I really am happy that everyone is having a good time! If anyone is wondering i know it would be fun to be with the family and those are the times we all treasure but i know that im supposed to be here and I would want to wish to be anywhere else in the world right now! But without this sounding cheesy i wouldnt be able to feel this way if it wasnt for the amazing intimidate family I have and extended. My family is probably the biggest reason why i am what i am today and why i am doing what i am. I really do love you all and am grateful for you. If for some reason someone is like oh i wonder was russ is doing or that would be fun if he were here just throw on a Hawaiian shirt and do a little dance or something haha i dont know. July 23rd 2014 | Provo MTC | Week 4

OHHHHH man!!!! THAT'S AMAZING ABOUT UNCLE BRYAN!!! I am so happy but so so so mad!!!! Like come on!! but that so awesome i cant even handle it! They need him so bad! and that's really going to be good for drake. He could learn so much from uncle Bryan! Make sure to tell him that I am super happy and mad that it wasnt sooner but that's awesome!!! ahhh geeez that's so cool. Sounds like the cabin was fun! And since we all suck as Skiing we could date good skiers 1st makel then Tom. Were not stupid family lol nice to hear mom is up on the water and i know dad will be filling his ear drum with water before we know it! Unless he is wearing a swimmers cap cause his head gets to cold!! hah cheap shot. 

   Mom giving a killer lesson in RS i would have loved to see that! Sometimes we need a little wake up after six hours of class in a row too! I still cant stop smiling about uncle  Bryan and its funny cause last night i was thinking about the hurricanes a lot last night for the first time. I think later I'm going to write a letter to Someone like Jamal and the other guys to have them read to the team or whatever about what an honor is it to wear the jersey and play in front of the fans. Cause really Lethbridge has amazing fans. Anyways I'm really am grateful for my time and all the things I learned there and maybe its a good thing uncle Bryan didn't coach last year or i probably would have made the NHL and wouldn't be on a mission!! 

    Ya school is starting that's excited.. kinda. Joc you find a place!? I don't know if you told me?? and that's to bad to hear about chase but i reminded me or brooks and at least its a funny story now haha was paxton crying like i was lol That is kinda to bad that uncle Bryan isn't playing with you dad but its good your keeping your skills in line for the Christmas hockey game! That's important! And what's with the no squash? That's weak you guys? but I guess water skiing is as good of a workout! I'm sure there aren't a ton of things like a beehive camp out and maybe you learned some things dad haha 

    Sounds like a fun weekend with the cousins. Those bowling nights are always a good time and it never hurts to put mcdonlads on the line. OH and the food here is ok but its starting to get really old. I think they have like 10 meals so we eat the same stuff alot but its not to bad. A tear came to my eye when i heard about the softball but there is always next year i suppose. But it really is fun to play with all those friends and family every week! That's nice to hear about your typing test joc! So now that you can do that you can edit all my emails right?? thanks! And a 201 that's not bad Mitch but if dad was there he would have pulled out a 202 I'm sure haha jk. Good luck in camrose mitch I'm  sure that will be a little different coaching girls but we have had to coach pax our whole lives!! haha just kidding pax but i sometimes wonder with me gone if anyone is giving you a hard time?? I'm counting on you to learn the tricks of fishing cause we really struck out last time!! Thanks for those tips mitch. Teaching really is a skill and its a lot harder that i think i thought i would be. 

   Meg that crazy you were just right here!! i would have been so nice to see you! Maybe you drove by the mtc and saw me displaying my volleyball skills! One of my best friends is Anziano Pingree and he walked on the BYU basketball team and he is 6'8 and he was on the other team so I had my work  cut our for me but it was a fun time. He is a cool Elder. Sounds like laycees wedding went really good and I'm a little saddened cause I thought we had something hahaha ok totally kidding but that is cool that you got to go through the temple with her! Really is a cool experience my first time and im glad so many of the family could come it just made it so awesome! The temple reopened and we went last week and we will go again today so that was pretty sweet!! Brett my teeth are holding up if you were wondering! im flossing everyday even with the special floss. Thought i lost them the other day when i was eating an old puff wear square but just a false alarm lol Hows like golf game? you get enough time off school and meg lets you out of the house to hit the links every once in a while i hope!!!? 

  As far as my life it about the exact same as the last 3 weeks haha but it really is fun. Last night we had a really really cool devotional. A member of the 70 spoke to us and he only talked for maybe 15 mins total but he was having a family reunion so he had 8 of his 9 kids talk a little and share experiences for there missions. The 9th kid is serving a mission in korea. It was really cool as all the kids spoke and shared stories and it was like the Father was speaking just through all of his kids and they did a good job! Kind of like we are missionaries are supposed to do for our heavenly father! You could tell that the member of the 70 was proud and confident that his kids would say the right thing and i hope Heavenly father feels the same way about me but i also hope he doesn't care about grammar! I'm still getting along well with my companion and our group of Anziani (plular) are getting really close and its a good time. I'm sorry for the lack of cool stuff but just picture me in a classroom speaking horrible Italiano and learning about the gospel so what could be better!!!! 

 Ok mom i have been thinking about some things you could send me. We can actually get garments here so i actually ordered some today. Also they reimbursed me for the visa so i have 160 cash witch is nice haha so i wont be needing any more money lol It would be sweet if you could send me some pictures. Stuff like Me playing hockey or baseball or something maybe some of my  lack of teeth the anziani seam to take an interest in that. Oh Molto important could you buy me like 15 packs of the special floss from shoppers. It has like the stiff end with the fluffy part lol And also molto importante. could you send me my ping pong paddle.. Its on the fridge. I hear they play lots there so i would like that!! and the scripture that you could put on my plaque is Romans 1;15-16. I'll let you read that.  That's all I can think of and if you could do that I would be forever grateful!!
